Public sector employees under constant evaluation

Hundreds of thousands of civil servants are bracing for constant assessments this year, as they will have to undergo repeated oral and written exams that will determine the level of their salaries and their promotions.

The three criteria to be used for the evaluation of each public sector employee will be their knowledge, their skills and their performance at work. Those who fail to pass the mark will be shown the door.

The high-risk zone contains unskilled employees (with education certificates up to secondary level) who work at corporations or branches to be merged or abolished, or hold positions without a specific object, while even education workers will not be spared the exams.

Furthermore, the new disciplinary code introduced in the public sector will provide for strict penalties: Employees will be automatically suspended not only when found guilty of malpractice, but also before a verdict is issued when the case concerns serious incidents such as bribery or embezzlement.

Administrative Reform Minister Dimitris Reppas has not ruled out the option of the assessment process being monitored by the Supreme Council for Personnel Selection (ASEP).
