Evros in state of emergency

Increasing water flow stemming from the Bulgarian parts of the Evros river led local Greek authorities to declare a state of emergency in the prefecture of Evros late Monday night.

Residents in the villages of Vyssa, Ormenios and Dikaia were evacuated for preventive reasons early Tuesday, while authorities were preparing for more evacuations, Skai reported on Tuesday.

In the Peloponnese, the Patras-Korinthos national highway was closed at Aegialeia and road traffic diverted to the old national road on Tuesday, while the Andreas Papandreou general hospital in Pyrgos, in the prefecture of Ileia, reportedly suffered serious damage due to bad weather. Ferries remained docked at the port of Kyllini on Tuesday.

Harsh weather conditions around Greece have claimed the lives of three people.
