Despite signs that the level of the Evros River on Greece’s northern border with Bulgaria was beginning to recede slightly, the region entered its seventh day in a state of emergency on Monday.

The Evros broke its banks last week after a combination of a burst dam in Bulgaria, heavy rain and snowfall brought the river to unmanageable levels, forcing the evacuation of one village and placing at least another 10 hamlets on high alert.

Regional authorities continued shoring operations yesterday despite a drop in the river’s level and forecasts for a reduction in rainfall over the next few days.
