The government has been asked to offer a reward for any information leading to the arrests of the thieves who broke into the museum at Ancient Olympia on Friday and stole dozens of valuable items.
Western Greece Regional Governor Apostolos Katsifaras suggested that a reward could help in tracking down the perpetrators.
“Finding and arresting the thieves is a matter of honor and dignity for our country, which found itself the subject of negative publicity again,” he said in a letter sent to Prime Minister Lucas Papademos on Monday.
Police have collected forensic evidence from the site.
It is currently being analyzed in police labs in Athens.
The Association of Greek Archaeologists called for security at the country’s museums to be stepped up in order to avoid more thefts.
