Soccer player shoots, injures rival fan

Police in Edessa in northern Greece were on Tuesday looking for a soccer player who faces attempted manslaughter charges after shooting a fan of a rival soccer team in the legs on Sunday.

The unnamed athlete was playing with his team, amateur club Iraklis Asrprou, against Agra in Pella, when he became involved in a verbal altercation with a fan of the guest side, which lost the match 0-5.

According to the witness reports, immediately after the end of the game, the 31-year-old athlete went to his house, located near the municipal soccer stadium, and returned with a gun. He allegedly shot the fan with whom he was seen arguing earlier five times in the legs.

Police investigators say the gun belonged to the soccer player's brother, who had a license for it. They also said that the suspect ran away after the incident and is currently being sought.

The 46-year-old victim of the attack was undergoing surgery on Tuesday for his injuries, which are not considered life-threatening.
