The European Court of Justice on Tuesday ordered Greece to pay compensation to 13 inmates at Ioannina Prison after being found guilty of violating their human rights. The prisoners, 12 Greeks and a Somali national, complained they were held in cramped conditions, forced to remain in their beds for 18 hours a day and denied medical care. The inmates were serving sentences of 10 months to four years. The government will have to pay them damages of between 7,000 and 15,000 euros each.
