Bogus IKA sick note scam uncovered in Iraklio

As many as 12 doctors working for the Iraklio branch of Greece’s largest social security fund, IKA, are believed to have been involved in a scam regarding bogus sick notes, mainly for immigrant workers on Crete.
A random check at the IKA center uncovered the scam, which allegedly involved the doctors accepting bribes of between 100 and 200 euros to issue notes for illnesses or other ailments that would keep the workers involved away from work, in which case the social security fund would have to pay part of their salary.

One of the doctors allegedly involved in the scam issued notices granting a total of 7,250 days off work to 285 workers.

The head of the IKA center in Iraklio, Nikos Rokadakis, said that he is waiting for a final report from inspectors before taking legal action against the doctors involved.
