Three people believed to be linked to a large-scale internet scam faced a prosecutor on Thursday while a fourth suspect was being sought.
The four are believed to have sent out an email to thousands of internet users on Monday ostensibly informing them of a tax rebate. By doing so they allegedly managed to extract the personal details of at least three credit card holders and to have conducted online purchases, according to members of the police’s electronic crimes squad.
On Tuesday, police arrested the first of the three suspects, a 26-year-old man while one of the products he had ordered over the Internet was being delivered. Another two suspects, a 25-year-old man and a 21-year-old woman, were subsequently traced. No details were available about the fourth suspect who remains at large.
A police search on the home of the 26-year-old turned up two laptops, several computer hard drives and a stack of notebooks. The suspect has been charged with fraud in the past, police said.
