Citizens’ Protection Minister Michalis Chrysochoidis met with Athens Mayor Giorgos Kaminis on Wednesday to discuss ways of boosting cooperation between local and central authorities in order to curb rising crime in the city center.

The two men agreed that the key scourges of the city center are illegal trade, a burgeoning population of undocumented immigrants and the proliferation of guns and drugs.

“The city is suffering a systematic decline,” Kaminis said.

Chrysochoidis, for his part, remarked that “it is a shame for a historic capital to present such an image.”

He and Kaminis reportedly agreed on a set of measures, to be implemented “very soon” to curb these phenomena.
