14.7 mln euros levied in fines over contribution dodging in 2011

Over 13,302 fines were levied against employers in 2011 for failing to pay social security contributions, according to a report presented to Parliament on Tuesday by Labor and Social Security Minister Giorgos Koutroumanis, who was unable, however, to specify what percentage of the total 14,721,500 euros in fines has been collected so far.

Speaking to Parliament on the progress made by his ministry to clamp down on contribution dodgers, Koutroumanis said that spot checks by a special auditing force for Social Security Foundation IKA-ETAM in 2011 put together 13,302 cases concerning employers who failed to pay social security benefits.

Koutroumanis added, however, that he was unable to say how much of the 14,721,500 euros in fines had been collected by authorities so far as some of the cases may have been referred to courts, while many employers may be delaying payment as they await settlement deals to be made with the indebted institution.
