State hospital services were disrupted on Wednesday as doctors and nurses held work stoppages and staged protests against the government’s ongoing austerity drive which includes cutbacks to health sector spending. Hospital doctors were also holding a go-slow protest, demanding the payment of some four months’ worth of overtime hours. The union representing Greek state hospital doctors, known by its acronym OENGE, was convening on Wednesday to decide how to proceed with its protest action. Nursing staff and other hospital staff are planning to hold further work stoppages next Thursday.
