President Karolos Papoulias has thanked friends of Greece abroad, particularly members of the diaspora, in a message issued ahead of Independence Day celebrations on Sunday.
In his message, Papoulias thanks the diaspora for its support during the crisis and said that its members “relay Greek spirit and culture” and provided a “pillar of moral support” for their homeland.
Papoulias said he detected a “new spirit of philhellenism” that would “support our people’s efforts to overcome the crisis.”
The president is due to attend the military parade in Athens on March 25, which will take place amid tight security due to fear of protests.
