Economic affairs prosecutor Grigoris Peponis has asked for a copy of a recent Court of Audit report that identified a 47-billion-euro overspend by the government in 2009.

Peponis wants to see if charges can be leveled against any public officials in connection to payments of some 650 million euros that were made without meeting public expenditure rules.

This included public contracts being handed out without a tender process and civil servants receiving bonuses they were not entitled to.
