An employee in the central post office of Piraeus died of a gunshot wound on Thursday, after witnesses said that a man, aged in his 30s, walked into the facility holding a pistol and shot the young woman at her desk, Skai Television reported.

According to the report, the man was arrested while leaving the post office by officers of the police's rapid-response squad DIAS, who arrived at the scene within minutes of receiving several calls from customers and employees at Piraeus's main post office, who saw the shooting take place.

The man, witnesses said, headed straight for the victim's desk, shot her from a close distance and left, leading investigators to believe that his motive was personal.

The unnamed woman, aged in her early 30s, died at the scene.
