The Greek state employs a total of 705,976 people, according to figures released on Tuesday by Administrative Reform Minister Dimitris Reppas. The census of the civil service, which was completed on Monday and is the first comprehensive list of its kind to be published in the country, found that Greece has 636,188 civil servants in permanent employment, 49,546 on back-up duty and another 20,242 working in other capacities. Greece’s creditors — the European Commission, European Central Bank and International Monetary Fund — have rapped the government for dragging its feet over the reform of its costly public administration, demanding that 15,000 state employees either be dismissed or put in a labor reserve scheme, where they receive 60 percent of their salary, by the end of this year. Reppas added that the long-term target of reducing the civil service by a total of 150,000 employees by the end of 2015 is «feasible» and is proceeding «at a satisfactory pace.”
