Giorgos Kyrtsos, a publisher and journalist often quoted by foreign media as the voice of reason amid the populist din, said on Tuesday that he will be running in upcoming snap elections -- possibly on May 6 -- with the far-right Popular Orthodox Rally (LAOS).

"It is a great honor and a joy that an exceptionally eminent personality will be joining us,» LAOS leader Giorgos Karatzaferis said in a official announcement of Kyrtsos's candidacy, adding that the journalist will be responsible for issues relating to the European Union and will act as the party's spokesperson.

"I have accepted the challenge -- and the invitation -- of a leader who has opened a new road and to whom we owe a lot,» Kyrtsos said.
