A 61-year-old man who allegedly netted nearly 100,000 euros in cash and valuables by masquerading as a state welfare employee and beating up unsuspecting elderly victims has been arrested in Fyli, northwestern Athens, police said on Monday.

The suspect was caught following an attack on the home of an elderly woman who he is alleged to have beaten before robbing of 650 euros.

He is believed to be behind similar attacks on a total of 18 victims, chiefly elderly women, according to police who are seeking two female suspects believed to have acted as accomplices.
