Afghan remanded for Patra murder

One of the three Afghan nationals arrested earlier this week in connection with the murder of a 30-year-old Greek man in the western port of Patra was remanded in custody on Friday.

The Afghan, who was arrested last month for entering the country illegally along with his two compatriots, reportedly told police he had nothing to do with the killing, indicating that he had walked away when the other two Afghans started arguing with the victim.

The 30-year-old was found with six stab wounds to the chest and stomach near his house in the Ities area of the western port city on Saturday night. Police said the three Afghans had been seen arguing with the man earlier after his dog apparently attacked one of them.

Since then local residents have held protest rallies in Itea which have been marred by violence after being hijacked by suspected members of the extreme-right party Chrysi Avgi (Golden Dawn). A rally that had been scheduled for Thursday night was canceled due to bad weather.
