Greek Education Minister Froso Kiaou wrote to German Nobel laureate Gunter Grass (photo) on Wednesday to thank him on behalf of Prime Minister Panayiotis Pikrammenos for a recent poem in which he criticized the European Union’s handling of the Greek crisis. “With a poet’s sensitivity you express, again, your love for the spirit and history of Greece, a cornerstone of Europe and European civilization,” the letter said. “You can be sure that the poem gave strength to our people during these difficult days.” Greece was being disparaged as a country “below junk value,” Grass wrote in his poem. He said Greece was being “abandoned as a naked debtor in the dock, a country suffers… and is condemned to poverty.”
