Police in northern Greece on Monday arrested 19 people, including a police special guard, thought to be members of an armed gang that carried out a number of bank robberies in the area. The gang is thought to have snatched 250,000 euros in just two bank heists last week. Three of those arrested are thought to hold leading roles in the gang, which is also suspected of blowing up ATMs. Several Kalashnikov assault rifles and bulletproof vests were seized.
The police operation was continuing last night.
