Nicole Kyriakopoulou earned Greece’s first medal in the European Track and Field Championship in Helsinki on Saturday after finishing third in the women’s pole vault final.

The Greek champion cleared 4.60 meters, the same as the other two medallists on the night, but made the height at her third attempt.

She then tried three times to clear 4.70 m. to win gold, but she failed.

“I am so happy, I cannot describe how I’m feeling. For me this medal is very important. The rainy weather did not help me at all. It was the first time I had competed under such circumstances,” said a joyous Kyriakopoulou, who can now aspire to win an Olympic medal in London in August.
