Greece’s main social security fund, IKA, launched on Monday a second census of pensioners in a bid to tackle possible fraud and root any people that are claiming retirement pay illegally.

Greeks claiming a state pension have until September 28 to present themselves either at an IKA office or the place they receive their retirement pay from (post offices and banks) with their pension documents, their ID card and social security number (AMKA).

Pensioners unable to leave their homes or those living abroad have to authorize someone to do this on their behalf.

The first ever census of Greek pensioners was conducted between July 1, 2011 and September 30, 2011. A total of 898,643 pensioners registered as part of the process but another 109,421 people who were claiming monthly retirement payments did not present themselves. After notifications were sent to these people, the number of those who failed to come forward fell to around 32,000.
