The management of the Children’s Hospital in Pendeli, northeastern Athens, has ordered a disciplinary investigation into the operation of a forgery racket issuing fake documents certifying dyslexia.

A statement by the hospital said that an initial probe into the scam was launched last October when the principal of a secondary school in Attica asked for a dyslexia certificate of one of its pupils to be checked. The document was clearly fake, according to sources who said the stamp was inaccurate and the protocol number wrong. The suspected head of the racket is a 73-year-old former employee of the Sismanogleio hospital who also had worked for the Pendeli hospital until retiring in 2006. After retiring, she allegedly offered to work as a consultant for free but was refused.

It was unclear whether the pupils’ parents were acquiring the fake certificates to exempt their children from examinations or to qualify for state benefits.
