Terror suspects pull a runner

Two self-professed members of a militant group that has claimed several bomb attacks in Athens, including the launching of a rocket-propelled grenade at the US Embassy in 2007, have violated the terms of their release, according to police who on Thursday suspended the head of an Athens precinct and ordered a judicial probe. According to police, Nikos Maziotis and Panayiota Roupa, a couple who have admitted to being leading members of Revolutionary Struggle, have gone missing after serving 18 months in pretrial custody. The pair were freed from prison but failed to report to the police precinct in Exarchia on June 15 and July 1. The precinct chief was suspended after failing to notify superiors. Meanwhile a Piraeus court gave jailed November 17 member Savvas Xeros a five-month furlough to undergo treatment at a Thessaloniki hospital. Xeros, who has had hearing and visual problems since a bomb exploded in his hands in 2002, is to be treated under police guard.
