Hopes for drug cost cut

Health Minister Andreas Lykourentzos told a conference in Athens on Tuesday that the government’s aim is for state pharmaceutical expenditure to decline to 2.88 billion euros, including value-added tax and hospital medicines. Spending on drugs declined from 5.6 billion euros in 2010 to 3.8 billion last year, according to data presented earlier this year by the ministry.

"The health system is at a crucial point indeed,» Lykourentzos said, highlighting the positive impact of the electronic prescriptions system.

Constantinos Frouzis, the president of the Association of Pharmaceutical Enterprises of Greece (SFEE), said that the key lies in the funding of the National Organization for Healthcare Provision (EOPYY).
