Troika mission expected in the coming days

Troika inspectors are set to return to Athens in the coming days, a spokesman for the European Commission said Tuesday, without giving exact dates.

Past reports had suggested that troika officials, set with the task of reviewing the debt-laden nation's finances, would travel to the Greek capital on July 24.

On Tuesday, the European Commission's spokesperson for economic and monetary affairs and the euro, Simon O'Connor, said he had no knowledge of how long the mission would stay in Athens or of when the troika's report on Greece's fiscal adaptation program would be completed.

Officials have suggested that a progress evaluation report would be a precondition -- but not a guarantee -- for any modifications to Greece's bailout program, known as the memorandum.

A team of inspectors -- representing the European Central Bank, the European Commission and the International Monetary Fund -- visited Greece early July.
