Warning on web scam offering jobs for London Olympics

The police's electronic crimes unit on Thursday issued a warning to citizens to beware of websites advertising jobs in London's hotels and tourist industry ahead of the Olympic Games which the British capital is hosting in a few days time.

According to a statement issued by the Greek Police, there has been an increase in the number of such websites which request the personal details of would-be workers along with a deposit for their travel and accommodation expenses. In several cases, the advertisements ask for the deposits to be wired using the services of companies such as Western Union and Money Gram, not paid into bank accounts, in an apparent attempt to avoid being traced by authorities.

The police advised against sending money in such cases unless the existence of the firms purporting to be offering jobs has been established.

Those who believed they have fallen victim to such a scam, or who want to report a suspicious incident, can contact the electronic crimes squad at [email protected] or at [email protected] or on the telephone numbers 11012 και 210 647 6464.
