A charity that runs a care home in Athens for pensioners with disability problems said on Thursday that its electricity had been cut off and it is not able to feed residents properly.

The president of the foundation that runs the Aniaton Asylum in Kypseli, Ioanna Iliadi, told journalists that the Public Power Corporation had cut off power to the home on Thursday morning because it was unable to pay a 600-euro property tax that was levied through its electricity bill.

Iliadi said that the charity was unable to pay the tax because it is owed 3 million euros by Greece’s main healthcare fund, EOPYY, for the care it offers to residents. This has led to the home being unable to pay its 170 employees since March and having little food to feed the 235 elderly people it cares for.

“Our next move will be to take the case to the relevant prosecutor because people’s lives are now in danger,” said Iliadi, who added that she had notified the government of the problems the home is experiencing.
