Clashes broke out early on Monday morning between riot police and strikers at the Halyvourgia steel mill in Aspropyrgos, western Attica, when the latter tried to block workers from entering the plant.

Halyvourgia started operating again on Friday following a nine-month shutdown due to a labor dispute after the government decided to force the plant open by deploying police to allow hundreds of workers who wanted to get the plant back into operation.

On Monday morning, Communist Party-affiliated PAME unionists prevented staff from entering the premises, resulting in the intervention of riot police.

"There are 100 of us inside the factory and more are coming to work,» Eleni Katavati, who represented the workers during the nine-month standoff with management, said.
