Hit-and-run twins out of danger

A pair of 7-year-old twins that were razed down by a motorcycle along with their mother in central Athens earlier this month, are reportedly out of immediate danger and have been moved from intensive care to a regular ward.

The boy and girl were walking with their mother along central Patission Street in central Athens on July 12 when a motorcycle being driven by a 21-year-old Navy officer rammed into them at high speed, causing multiple injuries to all three. The twins were taken to the Aglaia Kyriakou Children’s Hospital where doctors said they had suffered massive internal injuries, with the boy considered to have sustained the most life-threatening injuries.

Both children were removed from intensive care over the weekend, but are looking at a long stay in hospital as they both still need to undergo multiple surgeries for injuries to their faces, limbs and abdomens.

Their mother, who was deemed to be out of risk, was treated at Evangelismos Hospital and is said to be recovering well, though she will also have to undergo surgery to her eye and stomach.

The 21-year-old motorcyclist surrendered to police a few hours after the accident on the urging of his father. He had also injured a cyclist prior to running into the two children and their mother.
