Barroso to meet Samaras on Thursday

European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso is due in Athens on Thursday, for talks with Prime Minister Antonis Samaras, in what will be the first visit by the European official to Greece in three years.

Barroso will reportedly not be accompanied by other European officials on his visit and has scheduled to meet only with Samaras, not with the other two leaders of the tripartite coalition government. Some sources indicated that the two men might meet as early as Wednesday night, a day before scheduled talks between top-ranking envoys representing Greece's international creditors and Finance Minister Yannis Stournaras.

A spokesperson for Barroso said that he and Samaras were to discuss the economic situation in Greece and in Europe as a whole. He added that the visit was not an emergency decision but part of Barroso's regular contacts with European leadrrs.
