A border fence being constructed along Greece’s northeastern border with Turkey in a bid to deter clandestine immigrants is to be completed by early October, officials said.

During an on-site inspection on Wednesday, Public Order and Citizens’ Protection Minister Nikos Dendias vowed that authorities will provide all the necessary manpower and technical resources for the project to succeed.

“All campaigns [to counter illegal immigration] are doomed as long as entry points remain open; we shall therefore try to seal them,” Dendias said. Launched in February, the 10.3-km fence topped with razor wire is expected to cost some 3.2 million euros. The company in charge of the project said delays were due to bad weather during the winter.

Meanwhile, Alternate Development Minister Stavros Kaloyiannis on Wednesday approved the use of dozens of container homes — originally set up to house earthquake victims — to accommodate immigrants kept at the Amygdaleza detention center northwest of Athens.
