Aristotle University rector denies spending spree

The rector of Thessaloniki’s Aristotle University, Ioannis Mylopoulos, on Friday vehemently rebuffed allegations of exorbitant spending on renovations, including 1.3 million euros on a revamp of the university grounds, during a press conference where it was suggested that the institution’s previous administration was to blame. Mylopoulos and several members of the university senate fielded questions from journalists regarding allegations of huge outlays -- such as 30,000 euros on a bathroom renovation. There were several tense exchanges and one academic stormed out of the room.

The rector claimed the figures published in the Eleftheros Typos newspaper were misleading. The 30,000-euro figure related to the renovation of a large section of an entire faculty’s floor, Mylopoulos claimed, while the 235,000 reportedly used to reconstruct the university store had gone to other projects too, he said. Senate members spoke of “unprecedented slander” and called for a probe into mismanagement of finances to be extended to the previous administration.
