Greece’s two largest unions, GSEE and ADEDY, have decided to hold a 24-hour general strike on Wednesday, September 26.

It will be the first public and private sector strike since the coalition government came to office.

GSEE, which represents the private sector, said that it’s protesting proposals for a new reduction to the minimum wage, the scrapping of collective salary bargaining, cuts to redundancy pay and an increase in the retirement age.

The unions have planned a rally at Pedion tou Areos park in central Athens at 11 a.m. on September 26.

Meanwhile, municipal workers are due to stay away from work until 11 a.m. on Friday to protest the arrest of four garbage truck drivers who took part in a protest on August 29.

Doctors working with the National Organization for Healthcare Provision (EOPYY) said that they would continue their go-slow protest over unpaid wages until September 19.

The doctors say they are owed 260 million euros for services provided this year.
