Golden Dawn case file goes to Parliament

The Supreme Court was on Thursday to forward to Parliament the case file drawn up by prosecutors in Mesolongi, western Greece, following raids by members and supporters of the far-right Golden Dawn on street vendors.

An appeal has been made for the parliamentary immunity to be lifted from Golden Dawn MP Constantinos Barbarousis who led the crowd of party members and supporters in a raid on on an open-air market, as shown in videos of the sweep uploaded onto the Internet. He is to face charges of usurping authority, by demanding that vendors display their police identification cards, and damaging private property, as members of the group trashed the kiosks being managed by immigrants.

On Wednesday, two men were handed eight-month suspended jail sentences by a prosecutor in Mesolongi after being found guilty of usurping authority when they tried to conduct ID checks on traders at a local street market. Another two men detained on the same charges were cleared. The four were reported to authorities by a 58-year-old Greek female vendor who refused to present them with her police ID card.

Prosecutors in Rafina, northeast of Athens, are looking into a similar raid by members of Golden Dawn there.
