Heavy snowfall in the region of western Macedonia led to many motorists fitting their cars with anti-skid chains on Wednesday, particularly in mountainous areas.

The country roads between the city of Grevena and the small towns of Samarina, Vasilitsa, Perivoli and Metsovo were particularly badly affected as were those connecting Kastoria and Florina and Ioannina.

A three-kilometer section of the Kastoria-Florina road near the village of Vitsi was closed off due to landslides caused by strong winds in the area that left large piles of snow on the road surface.

Roads around Karditsa, in central Greece, were also said to be dangerous.
