IKA clinic in central Athens closes down

Less than five months since the launch of state hospital mergers, part of a cost-cutting drive demanded by Greece’s creditors, the Health Ministry on Wednesday announced the closure of another Social Security Foundation (IKA) clinic and the transfer of its equipment and staff to other hospitals in the Attica region.

The clearing of the premises near Kaningos Square in central Athens will save 249,600 euros annually, the ministry said.

The decision was yesterday criticized by the hospital workers’ union, which called for a protest outside the clinic on Thursday at 10 a.m.

Main opposition SYRIZA called it a “criminal plan to dismantle the National Health System.”
