Ten people who sat between 2008 and 2009 on the executive board of AMEL, the public company that runs the Athens metro, were charged with felonies on Thursday in connection to a series of illegal hirings during that period.

The charges issued by the Athens prosecutor’s office are based on an investigation carried out by public administration inspector Leandros Rakintzis, which uncovered that in the runup to the October 2009 elections, 210 people were hired in just 23 days.

Rakintzis said that as a result of these additions, the company showed losses of 22 million euros in 2009.

Rakintzis also noted that the hirings were from particular parts of Greece and that 17 of them were taken on despite negative recommendations by other AMEL staff.

The prosecutor’s office dropped its probe into hirings made between 2005 and 2007.
