Students from across the country are scheduled to protest outside the Education Ministry Thursday against the government's so-called Athena scheme for reducing the number of university departments.

Meanwhile, students at the Patra technical college (TEI) have decided to continue their sitin at the institution until Tuesday.

The scheme, which among other things foresees the closure of 97 departments, mostly at technical colleges, has already met with opposition from academics and students. Democratic Left, a member of the country's three-party coalition, has also expressed reservations about the plan.

In comments made to Skai on Wednesday, former deputy Education Minister Evi Christofilopoulou, a socialist, warned against “patchwork solutions that offer no convincing response” to the problems of tertiary education.
