Prison fugitive arrested for Pieria campsite theft

Police in northern Greece on Monday arrested a 29-year-old convict believed to have stolen a safe containing more than 20,000 euros from a campsite on the coast of Pieria after violating the terms of his six-day furlough.

The convict, who is serving time for other thefts at the Nea Kassavetia prison, broke into the administrative offices of the campsite on Panteleimonas Beach on Sunday morning and stole a safe containing 20,000 euros in cash, 10 golden sovereigns, jewelry and other valuables belonging to holidaymakers staying at the facility, according to police.

Police traced the suspected perpetrator in Katerini with the help of tipoffs from locals.
