Greece needs political stability, says European Commission

The need for political stability in Greece was underlined by the European Commission on Monday.

Speaking in Brussels EU spokesman Olivier Bailly noted that Greece's political leaders ought to show responsibility in order for political stability and fiscal consolidation to continue in the debt-stricken country, currently in its sixth year of recession.

Bailly also noted that the European Commission had taken into consideration the Greek government state television and radio network ERT was closed down last week.

Meanwhile, the President of the European People’s Party (EPP), Wilfried Martens, expressed his support for Samaras. In a statement, Martens said that ERT’s closure was a ‘one-way road,” noting that numerous efforts for the national broadcaster's restructuring while in operation had failed.
