Sea Diamond hearings to conclude by end of July

The hearings of the 13 suspects charged in connection with the sinking of the Sea Diamond cruiseliner off the coast of the southeastern Aegean island of Santorini in 2007 are expected to have been completed by the end of July, Skai understands.

A Piraeus misdemeanors court is to convene this week, focusing on documents relating to the sinking while lawyers representing the state have raised questions about studies by the Hellenic Center for Marine Research.

Meanwhile the company that built the Sea Diamond has submitted to the court a document noting that asbestos was not used in the vessel's construction. Traces of the chemical, which is carcinogenic, were found in the wreck.

Two French tourists - Jean Christophe Allain, 45, and his daughter Maud, 16 - died after the Sea Diamond struck a reef off the coast of Santorini and sank.
