The student who scored the highest marks in this summer’s university entrance exams will continue her education in Germany.
Alexia Papaioannou averaged 98.75 percent in her senior high school examinations. The results were good enough to secure a place at Athens Law School, as well as the country’s medical schools, but the teenager told Kathimerini that she intended to go to university in Munich or Heidelberg as she has secured a scholarship from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).
“I would not link my decision to study abroad just with the economic crisis and the difficulties young people face,” she said. “I think it is best to see my decision as one that reflects the appetite that all people have for change.”
