Former Tourism Minister Costas Markopoulos looks set to be the first MP to accept a call by Prime Minister Antonis Samaras for lawmakers who have left New Democracy to return to the party.

Markopoulos quit New Democracy early last year to join the Independent Greeks but recently distanced himself from the right-wing party led by Panos Kammenos in December.

Athens-Macedonia News Agency reported on Monday that Markopoulos is set to return to New Democracy this week.

In his closing speech at the conservative party’s congress on Sunday, Samaras called for Greece’s center right to rally around New Democracy.

Other lawmakers are expected to follow in Markopoulos’s footsteps.
