Members of the police’s counter-terrorism unit on Wednesday conducted a controlled explosion on a parcel addressed to a former head of the service, Dimitris Horianopoulos, which ignited after accidentally falling on the floor during sorting at a Hellenic Post (ELTA) branch in Kryoneri, northern Attica.

No one was hurt when the package, which identified the sender as Horianopoulos’s brother, ignited.

No details were released about the composition of the explosive device inside the booby-trapped envelope nor who may have put it together.

Horianopoulos was in charge of the investigation that led to the arrest of suspected members of Conspiracy of the Cells of Fire in 2009.

The guerrilla group claimed responsibility for letter bombs sent to embassies and foreign governments in 2010.
