The former head of New Democracy’s youth wing (ONNED), Andreas Papamimikos, was named the conservative party’s new secretary on Saturday.

Papamimikos was appointed rather than elected to the post after delegates at ND’s congress last week voted to change the party’s charter to allow this to happen.

In an open letter published after New Democracy leader Antonis Samaras became prime minister last summer, Papamimikos stressed the need for Greece to make reforms but also for the eurozone to change its approach to the debt crisis.

“Greece needs to make steps forward and implement all the necessary reforms, but also it is the time for Europe to realize the flaws of the cure she gave us,” he wrote.

“European Union leaders must now shift their policies toward growth, or otherwise the economic and sovereign debt crisis will turn into a political earthquake.”
