The country’s main healthcare provider, EOPYY, is “out of control,” Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis said on Wednesday as the organization’s new director revealed that its revenues were 100 million euros a month below target.
Monthly contributions to EOPYY are around 250 million euros, compared to a target of 360 million, Dimitris Kontos told Parliament’s social affairs committee.
Despite the critical shortfall, Georgiadis insisted that the government “will not let EOPYY collapse,” claiming that “any changes would be carried out with the organization in operation.”
Meanwhile a report by Greece’s public administration watchdog, Leandros Rakintzis, has found that EOPYY’s finances are in complete disarray. The report highlighted numerous cases of academics, politicians and doctors exploiting the system to secure treatment at private clinics abroad.
Rakintzis called for “drastic immediate intervention” to save EOPYY.
