Up to six hospitals in Athens are to be transformed into health centers as part of the government’s plan to make changes to the public healthcare sector.
The Health Ministry is to announce in the next couple of days its intention to turn five or six hospitals into health centers, which will provide fewer service and will be able to treat people with chronic illnesses.
Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis said that the hospitals chosen for this program would be the least busy in the capital. He also said that the government would follow the same practice in other parts of Greece.
Georgiadis insisted that the changes were not aimed at cutting public spending but at making better use of resources and personnel.
Any hospital staff found to be surplus to requirements when the switchover takes place will be given other duties within the healthcare sector. Georgiadis said the process of transferring the staff would take no more than two months.
Changes are also expected in primary healthcare, with EOPYY polyclinics being merged with existing health centers.
