British teen arrested over fatal stabbing of compatriot in Malia

A 19-year-old Briton was arrested on Tuesday over the fatal stabbing earlier in the day of a 20-year-old compatriot during a violent brawl outside a nightclub in the rowdy resort town of Malia, in northeastern Crete.

The unnamed suspect was taken into custody along with another 17 young men who are believed to have been involved in a violent altercation, believed to have been fueled by alcohol, in which a 20-year-old Briton was stabbed to death.

Eye witnesses told police that there were at least 30 young men, all British, involved in the melee, local media reported.

Paramedics called to the scene of the incident were unable to save the 20-year-old, who was lying bleeding in front of the closed nightclub in the early hours of Tuesday. The other youths involved in the fight had fled the scene, though authorities were able to track them down later in the day after questioning eye witnesses of the incident.

The 19-year-old is believed to have stabbed the 20-year-old in the chest, puncturing his heart.

Local media said that a police search of the 19-year-old's hotel room uncovered a pair of bloody shoes and clothes.
