Twenty-five mayors from central Macedonia in northern Greece wrote to the government on Wednesday to announce they they are set to resign en masse due to the latest structural reforms, which will lead to a reduction in staff and the scrapping of the municipal police force.

The head of the regional association of municipalities, Simos Daniilidis, said he expects more mayors to resign soon. Daniilidis, also the mayor of Neapoli-Sykies, accused the government of adopting “unconstitutional and anti-European” measures that would undermine local authorities.

In their letter, the mayors said they would quit unless the government hears their call.
